Abstract
Objective: The Holistic Curriculum is a purposeful response to the challenges arising from one-dimensional approaches in traditional education systems. Emphasizing the comprehensive development of students across six educational domains, this model seeks to provide an integrated framework for nurturing balanced, competent individuals capable of adapting to the complexities of the contemporary world. Despite the effectiveness and high aspirations of the Holistic Curriculum, its successful implementation depends on clear conceptualization for educational stakeholders; without proper understanding, effective and principled execution remains unattainable. Accordingly, the present study aims to conduct a systematic review of the Holistic Curriculum at the primary education level and to explicate the characteristics of its core elements in order to propose a coherent conceptual framework for its effective design and implementation.
Materials and Methods: Data were collected using a qualitative approach through a systematic review method. The process of selecting and analyzing studies followed the seven-step model proposed by Wright et al. (2007), including formulating the research question, defining the protocol, searching the literature, extracting data sources, quality appraisal, data analysis, and reporting findings. Relevant studies were identified using predefined keywords across three national databases: the Comprehensive Portal of Humanities, Magiran, and the Scientific Information Database (SID). Inclusion criteria comprised relevance to the research topic, availability of full-text open-access articles, and restriction to empirical research articles. After the screening process, 26 articles were selected as final sources. Their quality was evaluated using the PRISMA framework (identification, screening, eligibility, and inclusion based on peer-reviewed validation). Furthermore, category and subcategory analyses were conducted inductively. Inter-coder reliability was assessed using agreement indices, yielding a value above 0.7.
Discussion and Conclusion: Based on the findings, the Holistic Curriculum in primary education comprises six main elements and eighteen key features. The first element, strategic principles in goal formulation, includes three features (comprehensiveness and coherence, flexibility and responsiveness to individual differences, and attention to Iranian-Islamic teachings and societal needs). The second element, content, resources, and instructional materials, includes two features (comprehensive attention to principles of organization and selection in content development, and comprehensive attention to principles of selecting educational resources). The third element, teaching–learning strategies, includes two features (an integrative perspective on educational philosophical approaches and diversity in learning, including various modern teaching methods). The fourth element, evaluation system, includes three core features (the principle of repetition in assessment, methodological triangulation, and instrumental triangulation). The fifth element, learning time and space, is categorized into two components: learning environment and learning time. The learning environment includes three features (use of diverse teaching settings, alignment of space with learning context, and design of adaptive learning environments), while learning time includes three features (alignment of time with learning context, allocation of time for voluntary and extracurricular activities, and integration of instruction with school life). Finally, the sixth element pertains to human resources (teachers and educational staff), encompassing two features (participatory management in education and the multidimensional teacher).
The findings indicate that in implementing the Holistic Curriculum, not only must all six educational domains be simultaneously and integratively addressed in the teaching–learning process, but modern educational principles must also be consistently and synergistically incorporated across all curriculum elements. For instance, reliance on a single teaching method may have limited effectiveness; however, employing a combination of diverse teaching methods, aligned with learners’ needs and learning styles, can make the educational process more dynamic, interactive, and effective. Accordingly, policymakers and practitioners in the educational system are advised to adopt an integrated and comprehensive approach toward the identified elements and features and, instead of focusing on fragmented and isolated reforms, to pursue a systematic and unified approach in curriculum design and implementation, thereby providing the necessary foundation for the proper establishment of Holistic Curriculum principles across different levels of planning and execution.
