Abstract

Background: Proposing an ethical framework for research supervision can reduce the existing ethical pathologies.  This can contribute to the scientific development of students and academic departments in Iran. Methods: The study was conducted within the qualitative paradigm and the necessary data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Our research community includes supervisors and supervisees from Tehran state-run universities from them, informants were purposefully selected on the data saturation ground using snowball and key informant sampling. In order to analyze the narrative data, qualitative content analysis and coding process were applied. The credibility of the results was approved by peer auditsandmember checks. Results: The results indicate that ethical and professional criterion related to research supervision can be categorized into four main themes: issues related to students, issues related to teachers, issues related to academic departments, issues related to defense sessions. Conclusion: To reach the desired condition, we need to pave suitable legitimate grounds, help to meet teachers' and students' needs, and let people experience internal control by applying ethical frameworks.
